Colmar Christmas markets are, quite frankly, the most beautiful spot in all of France. This region has won numerous awards for ‘most beautiful place in France‘ and it’s not hard to see why this is one of the best destinations in Europe. And at Christmas it is truly transformed into something enchanting, something magical – a fairy tale Christmas Market that you need to visit at least once in your life! And it has a 500 year old history of hosting traditional Christmas markets. Colmar Christmas Market 2024 is going to be epic, extraordinary just like every year before it! Renowned for their incredible vibrant half-timbered houses, cobblestoned streets, flower pots, and adorably quaint village life, Colmar is the most breath taking place in all of France.

This region of France is said to have actually been the inspiration for Beauty and the Beast, and it’s very clear why—it looks just like the set of a Disney movie, but in real life! The entire town could totally be a Disney movie set, with villagers walking around carrying freshly baked bread or trading at the village market. Here are some practical tips for your visit!

How many days

You should spend at least 2-3 days in Colmar minimum, if you want to enjoy this incredible town and it is a great base to explore some of the other villages.

When to visit

Colmar is remarkable all year round. In Spring and Summer, they have the most exquisite flowers in bloom, while in Autumn, the tree colours turn a radiant orangey red. During the winter, the Christmas lights are exceptional. The area known as ‘Little Venice’ is the most renowned part of Colmar, as the town sits atop a number of canals. Make sure to take a seat at one of the many restaurants that line the waterways. For me, the ultimate experience was drinking rich, Alsatian red wine, eating fresh, warm bread, and watching the sun set in the most picturesque place in France.

What to do

Christmas Markets

The Christmas markets are completely free! You can also join one of the free walking tours; we joined a guided walking tour and it turned out to be one of my favourite things. It meant we were able to learn a little more about the incredible history of this amazing town. I’ll leave the link to the tour I took below.

All of the Christmas Markets in Colmar are in easy walking distance of one another, so you’ll find you’ll be able to mill around most of the Christmas market stalls and make your way through them easily enough.

The markets opening hours during the day start at around 11am and close at 9pm, but it’s best to check the official website for each market as this changes every year and they have not yet released the information.

The Six Christmas Markets of Colmar

There are six different markets in Colmar, each with a different theme and with their own set of unique characteristics.

These markets align with the city-wide celebration called the Magic of Christmas in Colmar, featuring illuminating displays in each of the six markets and it is straight up magical.

As the town centre is pedestrianised, you can effortlessly wander from market to market and square to square, admiring the lights, the Christmas trees, the decorations and festivities in every location.

The markets are spread throughout the town, with the most popular ones in Place des Dominicains, Place de l’Ancienne Douane, and Place Jeanne d’Arc. Stroll through wooden stalls offering handcrafted gifts, artisanal food, and local wines. The twinkling lights, festive decorations, and scents of mulled wine and gingerbread will transport you to a winter wonderland.

Petite Venise: The Children’s Market

Petit Venise, or ‘Little Venice’ is arguably the most beautiful place in all of Colmar, and is certainly my favourite. It’s made as a child’s kingdom! Created with kids in mind, both the young and the old are captivated by this place which is surrounded by 43 vibrant vendors, where you’ll discover numerous treasures before pausing to admire the nativity scene. It’s challenging to depart from this market without sipping warm spiced apple juice, riding the carousel horses, and dropping a letter to Santa in the giant mailbox.

2. Admire the Festive Decorations
During the Christmas season, Colmar is transformed into a real-life fairytale, with lights, wreaths, and ornaments adorning every street and building. Take a leisurely walk through the Old Town to fully immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. Don’t miss the illuminated Petite Venise district, where the reflection of the lights on the canals creates a magical scene.

3. Visit the Unterlinden Museum
Escape the cold and dive into Colmar’s rich history and art at the Unterlinden Museum. Housed in a 13th-century Dominican convent, the museum showcases art from the Middle Ages to contemporary works, including the famous Isenheim Altarpiece. It’s a must-visit for art and history lovers.

4. Indulge in Alsatian Cuisine
The Christmas markets are the perfect place to sample traditional Alsatian dishes. Warm up with a bowl of choucroute garnie, a hearty dish of sauerkraut and sausages, or try the famous flammekueche, a thin-crust pizza-like tart topped with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. Pair it with a glass of mulled wine (vin chaud) for the full festive experience.

5. Take a Day Trip to Nearby Alsatian Villages
If you have time, explore the nearby villages such as Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, and Eguisheim, each offering its own Christmas market and fairytale-like ambiance. These charming villages, with their traditional Alsatian architecture and festive spirit, are just a short drive from Colmar.

6. Ice Skating and Family Fun
For a bit of active fun, head to the ice rink at Place Rapp, where both adults and children can enjoy skating in the heart of Colmar. Nearby, there’s also a children’s Christmas market featuring rides, games, and festive treats, perfect for families.

7. Attend Christmas Concerts and Shows
During the holiday season, Colmar hosts a variety of Christmas concerts and performances. Whether it’s a choir singing traditional carols or a classical music concert in one of Colmar’s stunning churches, these events add a magical soundtrack to your visit.

Colmar during Christmas is truly a magical experience that feels like stepping into a storybook. Whether you’re exploring the markets, enjoying the delicious cuisine, or simply strolling through the beautifully decorated streets, Colmar is the perfect destination for an unforgettable holiday getaway.
