When to go

The best time to visit Santorini, is typically from late April to early November. The peak tourist season is during the summer months of June to August when the weather is warm and sunny. However, if you prefer fewer crowds and slightly cooler temperatures, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to early June) or fall (September to early November). These periods offer pleasant weather and a more relaxed atmosphere. Keep in mind that specific preferences and activities may influence your choice of when to go. We went in May and we loved everything so I can suggest to pick this month. 

How many days

The ideal duration for a visit to Santorini can vary depending on your preferences and what you want to experience. However, a typical stay ranges from 3 to 5 days. Here’s a general breakdown: 

3 Days: If you’re short on time, you can cover the highlights of Santorini in three days. This would allow you to explore the charming towns of Fira, Oia, and perhaps one other village, relax on beautiful beaches, and visit a winery or two. 

4 Days: With an extra day, you can delve deeper into the island’s attractions, spend more time at the beaches, take a boat tour to the volcano, and have a more leisurely pace to enjoy the stunning sunsets.

5 Days or More: If you have the luxury of more time, you can truly immerse yourself in Santorini’s beauty. You can explore additional villages, take day trips to neighboring islands like Thirassia or explore the archaeological sites. This allows for a more relaxed and immersive experience.

What to do

Fira 

Fira is situated on the edge of Santorini’s volcanic caldera, offering spectacular panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. Traditional white and blue-topped houses overlook steep cliffs, creating a breathtaking backdrop. The town is vibrant and offers a wide range of activities. You can stroll along cobbled streets and shop in boutiques, savor Greek cuisine in local taverns, or relax in cafes with views of the caldera. 

Fira is home to several interesting museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Santorini, which displays artifacts from ancient Akrotiri, and the Folklore Museum, providing an overview of the island’s culture and traditions. The town has a lively nightlife with bars and nightclubs that stay open late into the night. It’s a great place to socialize and have fun after sunset. Fira is also a common starting point for boat trips to Santorini’s volcano. You can book tours that include visits to the volcano, hot springs, and the nearby island of Thirassia.

 Sunsets in Fira are legendary. Many visitors gather at vantage points like the famous “Sunset Viewpoint” in Fira to admire the spectacular colors as the sun sets behind the horizon. The capital offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxurious suites with caldera views to more budget-friendly apartments. It’s advisable to book in advance during the tourist season.

Oia 

Located on the island of Santorini, is one of the most iconic and photographed destinations in Greece.

Oia is situated on the northern part of the island and offers some of the most spectacular views of the volcanic caldera and the Aegean Sea. Its characteristic white houses with blue domed roofs and churches are an integral part of its landscape. It is known for its romantic and tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for couples seeking a charming environment. It is also a popular spot for marriage proposals and honeymoons. 

Sunsets: Oia’s spectacular sunsets are legendary. Many visitors gather at vantage points like the Oia Castle to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon. It  hosts numerous art galleries, local artist boutiques, and souvenir shops. It’s an ideal place to appreciate Greek art and culture. 

The town offers a wide range of restaurants serving traditional Greek dishes and international cuisine. Dining at one of the restaurants with a view of the caldera is a unique experience.Oia is a shopper’s paradise with a selection of jewelry stores, clothing boutiques, ceramics shops, and art galleries. It’s a great place to purchase souvenirs.

Pyrgos

Pyrgos  is a charming and picturesque village known for its historical significance and unique beauty. 

This village is situated inland, in the center of Santorini, and is distinguished by its well-preserved traditional Cycladic architecture. It is characterized by narrow winding streets, white-washed buildings, and blue-domed churches, creating a quintessential Greek island ambiance.

Pyrgos has a rich history and was once the capital of Santorini. You can explore its medieval Kasteli (castle), which offers panoramic views of the island. The ruins of the Venetian fortress and churches with Byzantine-era frescoes are among its historical treasures.Pyrgos has a strong cultural presence with art galleries, boutique shops, and traditional tavernas serving local cuisine. You can also visit the Santozeum Museum, dedicated to the history and culture of Santorini.

Climb to the top of Pyrgos for breathtaking vistas of the entire island, including the caldera, the surrounding villages, and the Aegean Sea. This elevated vantage point is particularly popular for watching the sunset.

Compared to some of the more touristy towns on the island, Pyrgos offers a quieter and more tranquil experience, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a serene escape.

Megalochori

Megalochori is situated on the southwestern part of Santorini and is known for its well-preserved Cycladic architecture. The village features whitewashed buildings, narrow winding streets, and blue-domed churches, creating a quintessential Greek island ambiance.Megalochori boasts a rich history dating back to the 17th century. You can explore its historical sites, such as the beautiful church of Agios Nikolaos and the traditional old houses with their unique architectural features.

The village exudes a traditional Greek atmosphere with quaint tavernas, local shops, and wine cellars. It’s a great place to sample local wines and cuisine, including the famous Santorinian tomato fritters.

Megalochori is surrounded by vineyards and farmland, making it a picturesque destination. The village’s central square, shaded by tall trees, is a peaceful spot to enjoy a leisurely meal or a coffee.

It offers visitors a more authentic and less touristy experience compared to some of the island’s more popular destinations, making it a tranquil and serene place to explore.

Akrotiri 

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, also known as the Santorini Lighthouse, is an iconic structure located on the southern tip of Santorini Island.

The Akrotiri Lighthouse is a 10-meter tall white tower situated in a spectacular panoramic position. Built in 1892, this lighthouse is located on the southernmost point of the island, facing the Aegean Sea. Its historical function was to guide ships during nighttime navigation in the waters around the island, but today it is one of Santorini’s most captivating attractions.

• Eggplants: Eggplants play a significant role in Santorini’s cuisine. A popular dish is stuffed eggplant (melitzanes papoutsakia), where eggplants are filled with minced meat, tomatoes, and cheese.

This winery is a hidden gem nestled on the cliffs of Santorini, offering not only exceptional wines but also some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the island.

Upon arriving at Venetsanos, you’re immediately captivated by the stunning architecture that seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings. The winery’s design is a testament to both modern aesthetics and respect for the traditional charm of Santorini.

The wine-tasting experience at Venetsanos is nothing short of delightful. They specialize in producing wines from the indigenous Assyrtiko grape, and the results are outstanding. From the crisp and mineral-rich Assyrtiko to the more complex and aged versions, each wine I sampled was a revelation. The knowledgeable staff guided us through the tastings, offering insights into the winemaking process and the unique characteristics of Santorini’s terroir.

What sets Venetsanos apart, apart from its fantastic wines, is its unrivaled location. The terrace overlooks the azure Aegean Sea and provides a front-row seat to Santorini’s famous sunset. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while sipping on a glass of Venetsanos wine is a truly magical experience.

The winery also has a charming gift shop where you can purchase bottles of your favorite wines, as well as wine-related accessories and souvenirs to remember your visit.

V Lounge Cafè

V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar is located on the rooftop of the Panorama Boutique Hotel. This privileged location offers guests unobstructed views to the Aegean Sea, Caldera, Volcano and the magnificent Santorini Sunset.

Their aim is to provide impeccable and friendly service accompanied by carefully chosen chilled music in a modern, relaxing and romantic setting. The decor has been chosen in harmony with the beauty of Santorini creating the ideal atmosphere for socializing or enjoying a romantic drink, whilst taking in some of the best views in Santorini.

Fratzeskos Fish tavern

Fratzeskos Fish Tavern in Santorini is a hidden culinary gem that captures the essence of the island’s seafood traditions. Nestled in a charming corner of Santorini, this tavern offers an authentic and unforgettable dining experience.

The first thing that struck me upon entering Fratzeskos was the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place where you instantly feel at home, thanks to the friendly staff and the cozy, traditional Greek ambiance. The restaurant exudes a rustic charm that transports you to a simpler, more authentic era.

Now, onto the star of the show – the food. Fratzeskos specializes in fresh seafood, and you can taste the difference in every bite. • Wear Comfortable Shoes in Oia: When visiting Oia, wear comfortable or walking shoes. The streets are paved with cobblestones, and you may do quite a bit of walking.
• Plan for Sunsets: Santorini sunsets are spectacular. Plan to arrive early to secure a good spot and enjoy the show.
